PATRIOTS SPOIL SWEEP WITH SERIES FINALE VICTORY

Brownell receives no-decision in quality start

(Bridgewater, N.J., August 28, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 4-3 on Thursday night in the finale of a three-game series at TD Bank Ballpark.

GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the final meeting between the Ducks and the Patriots in the 2014 regular season

Somerset took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Ducks starting pitcher John Brownell. RBI singles from Ty Wright and Luis Montanez, along with a RBI double from Corey Smith, did the damage. Long Island trimmed the deficit to 3-1 in the top of the fourth on a RBI groundout from Joash Brodin off Patriots starting pitcher Matt Zielinski.

The Ducks tied the ballgame at three in the top of the seventh inning on a Dan Lyons RBI double and a run-scoring wild pitch. However, the Patriots regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a Damaso Espino sacrifice fly.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Brownell went seven innings, yielding three runs on eight hits with one strikeout. Zielinski allowed one unearned run over six innings on six hits with three strikeouts. Jason Lowey (5-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Sergio Perez (0-1) took the loss, allowing one run on one hit and two walks in one-third of an inning of relief. Jon Hunton earned his 42nd save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.

Brendan Harris paced the Ducks with four hits, while Cody Puckett added two hits and a run scored.

The Ducks now return home to open up a four-game series against the Camden Riversharks on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Ducks Water Bottles, courtesy of the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. The Ducks will also be running their Friday night Pizza Hut K-Man promotion. If the K-Man strikes out during the game, fans will be able to redeem their game ticket for an order of free breadsticks at a participating Pizza Hut location. Right-hander Bobby Blevins takes the mound for the Ducks against Riversharks southpaw Ryan Kulik.
