Flock improve to seven games above .500

(Bridgewater, N.J., June 14, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks swept a day/night doubleheader over the Somerset Patriots Saturday afternoon at TD Bank Ballpark. Long Island took game one 4-1, before completing the sweep with a 5-2 victory in game two.

GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the doubleheader

Long Island grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-out, RBI double from Joash Brodin off Somerset starter Matt Maloney. The Ducks added two runs in the fifth on a RBI double from Fehlandt Lentini and a sac fly from Cody Puckett to increase the lead to three.

The Flock added a fourth run in the top of the sixth inning on a RBI double from Brendan Harris. Somerset responded in the bottom of the inning with a RBI single from Eddy Martinez-Esteve for their lone run of the ballgame.

Ducks starter Rob Whitenack did not factor into the decision after tossing three scoreless innings without allowing a hit on two walks and two strikeouts. Maloney (2-2) received the loss, yielding four runs on nine hits and five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Josh Lansford (1-0) earned the win after a scoreless inning of relief. Jon Meloan earned his third save of the year with a scoreless seventh inning.

Lew Ford, Brodin, and Harris each recorded two hits in the ballgame to pace the Ducks bats.

Long Island scored first in game two on a solo home run from Ford in the top of the fourth inning off Somerset starter Erik Arnesen. A RBI infield single from Lentini, followed by a two-run single from Puckett, extended the Ducks lead to four.

A Harris RBI single in the sixth increased Long Island’s lead to 5-0. Somerset responded the next half-inning with a RBI single from Mike Wilson off Ducks starter Shaun Garceau to cut the deficit to 5-1. A RBI double in the eighth from Wilson brought the Patriots within three runs and capped the scoring for evening.

Garceau (6-1) earned the win, allowing one run on six hits and nine strikeouts in seven innings of work. Arnesen (5-3) received the loss after yielding five runs on eight hits, one walk and three strikeouts over eight innings. Jon Meloan worked a scoreless ninth inning to earn his four save of the year.

Ford led the way offensively for the Ducks in game two with two hits.
