DUCKS AND CRABS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

Flock take game one 3-2; Crabs take game two 2-0

(Waldorf, Md., June 8, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks split a single-admission doubleheader against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs Sunday at Regency Furniture Stadium. Long Island won game one 3-2 in 12 innings, while Southern Maryland earned the split with a 2-0 victory in game two.

GAME AUDIO: Highlights from the doubleheader

The Blue Crabs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off Ducks starter Bobby Blevins in game one. Luke Murton, in his first Atlantic League at-bat this year, lined an RBI double off the left field fence to score Jake Opitz from first base.

Long Island evened the scoring in the top of the fifth off Blue Crabs starter Brian Burres. A fielding error by the third baseman Opitz allowed Fehlandt Lentini to score from third and tie up the ballgame. The Ducks loaded the bases later in the inning but failed to capitalize, leaving the game tied at one.

The score remained tied at one until the top of the 12th inning when a two-run, two-out double from Adam Bailey gave the Ducks a 3-1 lead. Southern Maryland responded with a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th to cut the deficit to one, but ultimately stranded the tying run at second base to end the ballgame.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Blevins tossed eight innings, allowing one run on three hits and four strikeouts. Blevins retired the last 13 batters he faced. Burres worked four and one-third innings, allowing one unearned run on eight hits and four walks. David Kopp (1-0) earned the win thanks to two shutout innings of relief, while Jake Brown (2-2) took the loss after allowing two runs in the 12th inning. Jon Meloan earned his first save of the year despite allowing a run in the bottom of the 12th inning.

Cody Puckett paced the Ducks bats with three hits, while Lew Ford, Joash Brodin, Randy Ruiz and Bailey each pitched in with a pair of hits.

In game two, an RBI single from Dave Sappelt in the bottom of the sixth inning opened up the scoring. Two batters later, a sacrifice fly from Opitz increased the Blue Crabs lead to 2-0, providing the lone runs of the ballgame.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Ducks starter Casey Barnes tossed five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk. Blue Crabs starter Wade Korpi threw four scoreless innings, allowing four hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Brown (3-2) earned the win in game two after tossing two scoreless innings of relief. Steve Garrison received the loss for Long Island after allowing two runs in one inning of relief. Charlie Manning earned his first save of the year with a scoreless seventh inning.

Long Island takes on Southern Maryland Monday in the series finale. Shaun Garceau (4-1) will toe the rubber for the Ducks against Blue Crabs starter Brian Baker (1-4). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The live broadcast can be heard on the Ducks official YouTube channel by CLICKING HERE.
