DUCKS FALL TO BLUE CRABS IN EXTRAS

Southern Maryland earns first win of the year against Long Island

(Waldorf, Md., June 7, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 3-2 in 11 innings Saturday night in the second game of a five-game series at Regency Furniture Stadium.

The Blue Crabs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning off Ducks starter John Brownell. Dave Sappelt hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to give Southern Maryland its first lead of the series.

Southern Maryland remained in the lead until the top of the seventh inning. A two-out rally, capped off by an RBI double from Fehland Lentini off Blue Crabs starter Ian Marshall tied up the ballgame at one. The Blue Crabs regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Angel Sanchez. Long Island evened up the game in the eighth on a RBI single from Randy Ruiz.

The score remained tied at two until the bottom of the 11th inning, when a two-out RBI single from Johermyn Chavez won the ballgame for Southern Maryland.

Neither starting pitcher factored into the decision. Brownell worked seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, three walks and five strikeouts. Marshall tossed seven innings as well, allowing one unearned run on seven hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Eduardo Morlan (2-0) earned the win after a scoreless inning of relief, while Jeremy Accardo (3-5) received the loss.

Keith Castillo, Lew Ford and Joash Brodin each had two hits to lead the Ducks.

Long Island takes on Southern Maryland Sunday for a single admission doubleheader. Bobby Blevins (3-1) will toe the rubber for the Ducks in game one against Blue Crabs starter Brian Burres (3-2). First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:05 p.m., with game two beginning approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one. Long Island returns home on Wednesday, June 11 as the Ferry Cup Series returns to Bethpage Ballpark when the Ducks take the on the Bridgeport Bluefish in a three-game series. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with gates opening at 5:35. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Ducks Baseball Banks, courtesy of Municipal Credit Union.
