BRODIN'S BLAST LIFTS DUCKS TO TWINBILL SPLIT

Three-run homer in game two gives Long Island comeback win

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 17, 2014) – The Long Island Ducks split a doubleheader with the Camden Riversharks on Saturday night at Bethpage Ballpark, dropping game one 6-4 before responding with a 6-4 victory in game two.

Camden struck first in the opening inning on a RBI single to left by Wilson Batista off Ducks starter Fernando Hernandez. The Ducks tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Adam Bailey reached on an infield single off Riversharks starter Scott Gorgen and Lew Ford scored on an error by Batista.

The ‘Sharks took the lead back in the second on a RBI single by Zack MacPhee and a two-run double off the bat of Jorge Cortes. A run-scoring single by Cortes in the fourth extended the advantage to 5-1.

Long Island closed to within one with three runs in the fifth. Sacrifice flies from Fehlandt Lentini and Joash Brodin, along with a RBI triple from Ford did the damage. However, a two-out RBI single by Batista in the sixth put the game out of reach.

Gorgen (1-2) picked up the win, tossing five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out four. Hernandez (2-1) took the loss, surrendering five runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks in four innings. Matt Gorgen earned his fourth save with a scoreless seventh.

Both teams exchanged zeroes until the fourth inning of game two when Camden put up a three-spot against Ducks starter Jared Lansford. A bases loaded walk to Joel Galarraga and a two-run single by Norberto Susini did the damage.

The Ducks answered with a three-spot of their own in the fifth to tie the game. A throwing error by Batista and RBI doubles from Cody Puckett and Ford highlighted the inning. However, a RBI double by Alex Hudak in the top of the sixth put the Riversharks back on top.

Long Island would rally back once again in the bottom of the sixth. Following a single by Bailey and a walk by Chris McClendon, Brodin delivered a pinch hit three-run homer to right to put the Flock in front for good.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Lansford tossed three and two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on five hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Dan Blewitt pitched four and one-third innings, surrendering a run on two hits and four walks while striking out seven. Josh Lansford (1-0) picked up the win after retiring the only batter he faced in the sixth. Rob Semerano (1-3) was saddled with the loss, yielding three runs in his one inning of work. Leo Rosales earned his eighth save with a perfect ninth inning.

Duck Tales: Joash Brodin’s pinch hit three-run home run was his third longball of the year. He is now tied for second on the team in homers, trailing Adam Bailey by one. The home run was Long Island’s 12th of the year and first since May 10 at Lancaster, ending a streak of five consecutive games without a longball…Leo Rosales earned his eighth save in the game two win. That total leads the Atlantic League by three saves over Barnstormers right-hander Pete Andrelczyk and Bluefish righty Winston Abreu. The third-year Duck has converted every one of his save opportunities thus far in 2014… Lew Ford earned hits in both games of the doubleheader to extend his on-base streak to a Ducks season-high 13 consecutive games. During the streak, Ford is batting .426 (23-for-54) with five doubles, one homer, 10 RBI, 13 runs and five walks. Ford recorded two hits in game one, tying him with Cody Puckett for the team lead with eight multi-hit games this season. During his on-base streak, he has raised his batting average from .185 to .364…Puckett also hit safely in both games of the doubleheader, extending his hitting streak to a Ducks season-high 10 games. During the streak, the second baseman is batting .381 (16-for-42) with two doubles, six RBI and one run. He has raised his batting average from .237 to .316 during the 10 games…Josh Lansford, Brett Lorin and Eric Niesen pitched a combined four innings Saturday without allowing a run. The trio has now tossed a combined 33 innings without allowing an earned run this season…Saturday’s crowd of 6,435 at Bethpage Ballpark marked the first past-capacity crowd of the season. It was also the 628th sellout all-time, which is an Atlantic League record. The crowd increased the all-time attendance at the Duck Pond to 5,978,371, which is also an Atlantic League record. Long Island is now just 21,629 fans away from reaching the magical 6 million fan mark.
