ON CLOUD NINE: DUCKS WADDLE OFF WINNERS

Long Island earns ninth walk-off victory of season

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 25, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 4-3 in 14 innings on Sunday night in the final game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

GAME AUDIO: Ryan Strieby, Willis Otanez and Josh Barfield all launch homers

POSTGAME VIDEO: Kevin Baez, Josh Barfield and John Brownell talk about the comeback victory

The Patriots struck first in the top of the third inning on Cory Aldridge’s two-out, two-run single to center off Ducks starter John Brownell. Jeff Baisley added another run in the fourth when he scored from third on a throwing error.

Long Island cut the deficit to one in the fourth when Ryan Strieby launched a two-run home run to right off Patriots starter Roy Merritt. It stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth when Willis Otanez crushed a game-tying solo homer to left.

Both teams then traded zeroes until the bottom of the 14th when Josh Barfield launched a one-out solo homer to left-center field to win the game for Long Island.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Brownell tossed nine innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out five, and Merritt pitched five innings, yielding two runs on two hits while striking out six. Nick DeBarr (4-10) got the win after tossing a scoreless 14th inning, and Carlton Smith (2-1) suffered the loss, yielding a run in one and one-third innings.

The Ducks continue their homestand on Monday night when they open up a four-game series with the Lancaster Barnstormers. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. Catch Long Island and Lancaster battle each other at the Duck Pond for the first time since the Ducks defeated the Barnstormers in the 2012 Atlantic League Championship Series. Duck Tales: The waddle-off win was the Ducks’ ninth of the season and fourth during the month of August. It was also the third time the Ducks have won on a walk-off home run. Joash Brodin’s grand slam against Camden on July 19 and Adam Bailey’s three-run homer against York on August 3 were the other two…Ryan Strieby’s two-run homer to right was his third of the season and second at Bethpage Ballpark. Strieby’s first longball at home came on April 28 against the Sugar Land Skeeters. The first baseman has now gone deep twice in the last five games, hitting a two-run homer on August 21 at Camden as well…Willis Otanez’s solo homer to left in the eighth inning was his first of the season as a Duck. He last homered in a Ducks uniform on September 10, 2010 in a 4-0 home win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The Ducks have now hit 105 homers on the season and have gone deep in four of their last five games…With a single in the sixth inning, Adam Bailey extended his on-base streak to 13 consecutive games. He has also now hit safely in 10 of those 13 games. Bailey holds the team’s longest hitting streak (16 games) and on-base streak (23 games) in 2013…With nine innings pitched, John Brownell tied his longest outing of the season. He also went nine full innings on July 27 against Bridgeport and May 20 at Camden. The right-hander has now tossed 144 and one-third innings this year, good for fourth-most in the Atlantic League. With five strikeouts, John Brownell increased his season total to 122 which leads the league by one over York’s Chris Cody…At 14 innings, the game was tied for the longest innings-wise for the Ducks this season. Long Island also played 14 on July 1 at Somerset and on August 19 at Camden. At five hours and 10 minutes, it was the longest game time-wise in 2013.
