EIGHTH INNING RALLY STUNS DUCKS

Three-run frame erases comeback effort

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 24, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks were defeated by the Somerset Patriots 7-6 on Saturday night in the third game of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

Adam Bailey opened the scoring in the second inning with a mammoth solo homer to right off Patriots starter Erik Arnesen. The Patriots answered with three in the third off Ducks starter Bob Zimmermann on a RBI single by Yunesky Sanchez and a two-run double by Cory Aldridge.

Somerset took a 4-2 lead into the seventh, but a four-run inning put the Ducks on top by two. Bryant Nelson’s RBI infield single, Ryan Strieby’s two-run double to right-center and Bailey’s RBI single to left did the damage. However, three runs in the top of the eighth on Jonny Tucker’s RBI double and a two-run throwing error gave the Pats the lead back.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Zimmermann yielded four runs on six hits and seven walks in six innings, and Arnesen surrendered six runs on 11 hits with eight strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings. Jason Lowey (7-3) picked up the win after tossing a scoreless one-third of an inning, and Ian Snell (2-3) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs (one earned) on two hits in one inning. Jon Hunton earned his 32nd save with a perfect ninth.

Bailey, Bill Hall, Josh Barfield and Kraig Binick each had two hits to lead the Flock.

Duck Tales: Adam Bailey’s solo home run in the second inning was his 13th longball and 50th run batted in of the season. Seven of Bailey’s homers have come at the Duck Pond and two have come against the Patriots. Long Island has now hit 102 home runs as a team in 2013 and has gone deep in three of the last four games…Ralph Henriquez’s infield single in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to 15 games, just one shy of the longest by a Duck this season (16, Adam Bailey, May 19 – June 5). The catcher has also picked up at least one hit in 20 of his last 21 games. During that span, he is batting .357 (25-for-70) and has raised his batting average from .214 to .253…Bryant Nelson extended his hitting streak to six games with his RBI single in the seventh. The switch hitter has also earned hits in 11 of his last 13 games…Kraig Binick earned his first triple of the season in the fourth inning. The center fielder’s last three-bagger with the Flock came on October 5, 2012 in Game Three of the Atlantic League Championship Series…Adam Bailey and Ryan Strieby each had two RBI on the night. Bailey picked up his team-high 10th two-RBI and 14th multi-RBI game. Strieby earned his third two-RBI and multi-RBI contest.
