Second-year Duck earns Atlantic League honor

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 22, 2013) – The Atlantic League of Professional Baseball today announced that Joash Brodin has been named the league’s Player of the Week for the week of July 15-21. He is the second Duck to earn the honor this year (John Brownell, June 24-30).

“Joash has been outstanding in every facet of the game for us this season,” said Ducks manager Kevin Baez. “We are incredibly proud of his accomplishments and hope for continued success from him in the second half.”

During the Ducks’ seven-game homestand, Brodin compiled a .429 batting average (12-for-28) with three home runs and eight runs batted in. He also scored 12 runs, drew six walks and stole three bases. The switch hitter highlighted the week with a two-homer performance on Friday against the Camden Riversharks which included a waddle-off grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning. The next night, he raced home from third with the winning run in the ninth inning on a wild pitch.

Brodin’s week helped him increase his batting average for the season to .337, good for second in the Atlantic League behind Somerset’s Eddy Martinez-Esteve (.344). The Washington native ranks first in the league in hits (110) and runs scored (62), third in on-base percentage (.405), fourth in total bases (162) and fifth in walks (35). Entering Monday, Brodin has hit safely and scored a run in seven consecutive games and in nine of the 10 games following the league’s All-Star Break.
