Right-hander earns first win of the season

Long Island jumped out in front with two runs in the first inning on a RBI single by Bryant Nelson and run-scoring double play ball. Three more runs in the fifth inning off Blue Crabs starter Wade Korpi extended the lead to five. Josh Barfield’s two-run homer and Adam Bailey’s RBI single did the damage.

Southern Maryland cut the deficit to three on a two-run homer to right by Jose Julio-Ruiz off Ducks starter Nick DeBarr. A solo home run to right in the eighth by Jake Opitz and a RBI groundout by Jose Salas in the ninth made it a one-run game, but the Blue Crabs could not pull even.

DeBarr (1-6) earned the win, tossing seven innings, allowing just two runs on two hits while striking out four. Korpi (2-3) took the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned) on seven hits in five and two-thirds innings. Jared Lansford earned his fifth save of the year despite allowing a run in the ninth.

Nelson, Bailey and Ray Navarrete each had two hits to lead the Flock.

The Ducks and Blue Crabs close out their three-game set on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Replica Atlantic League Championship Trophies, courtesy of Briarcliffe College. Duck Tales: Josh Barfield’s two-run homer in the fifth inning was his fifth home run of the season and third at Bethpage Ballpark. The former Major Leaguer has now gone deep in each of the last two games in which the Ducks have hit a longball. Long Island has now totaled 78 home runs this season, the most in the Atlantic League…Tonight marked the second time this season that Nick DeBarr has faced the minimum 18 batters through the first six innings of the game. The right-hander also accomplished that feat in his first start of the year on April 21 at Sugar Land when he threw six perfect innings against the Skeeters…With two hits in the game, Bryant Nelson picked up his 19th two-hit game, Adam Bailey earned his 17th two-hit game and Ray Navarrete collected his ninth multi-hit contest. Nelson now has 22 multi-hit games on the year while Bailey has 20 and Navarrete has 13…Joash Brodin continued his hot hitting with another single, two walks and two runs scored. He raised his batting average to .332, good for third in the Atlantic League.
