STARTERS SHINE IN DOUBLEHEADER SPLIT

Willis and Brownell both fire complete games

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 24, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks split a doubleheader with the Bridgeport Bluefish on Monday night, dropping the first game 1-0 before taking game two 3-1 at Bethpage Ballpark.

POSTGAME VIDEO: Kevin Baez, Joash Brodin and John Brownell talk about the twinbill split

The Bluefish jumped out to an early lead in game one with a run in the first inning off Ducks starter Dontrelle Willis. Daniel Mayora doubled to lead off the game, and Prentice Redman followed two batters later with a RBI single.

That was enough for Bridgeport starter Hunter Jones (3-6) to earn the win, tossing all seven innings, allowing just five hits while striking out four. Willis (4-3) suffered the hard luck loss despite tossing the complete seven innings, yielding just one run on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Joash Brodin put the Ducks on top in game two with a leadoff solo homer to right in the bottom of the first against Bluefish starter Mike Parisi. Two-out RBI singles in the second by Dan Lyons and Brodin increased the lead to three. It stayed that way until the seventh when the Bluefish scored a run on a sacrifice fly to center by James Simmons but nothing more.

Ducks starter John Brownell (5-5) cruised to a complete game victory, allowing a run on six hits and a walk while striking out six in seven innings. Parisi (1-10) took the loss, surrendering three runs on nine hits and five walks with four strikeouts in five innings.

Brodin led the Flock with five hits and two RBI combined in the twinbill.

The Ducks play the third game of a five game series with the cross-sound rival Bridgeport Bluefish on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35. The first 1,500 fans in attendance will receive Thundersticks, courtesy of Big Geyser. It’s also an unused ticket day at the ballpark! Fans who could not make it out to a game earlier this season can exchange their tickets for ones of equal or lesser value at the Bethpage Ballpark box office for Tuesday’s game. Right-hander Connor Graham takes the ball for Long Island against Bluefish lefty Miguel Martinez.

Tickets for the game and all Ducks regular season home games are now on sale. Fans can purchase their tickets by visiting the Bethpage Ballpark box office, calling 631-940-TIXX or by CLICKING HERE. Fans unable to make the game can follow all the action live online, with streaming video and audio available on the Ducks official YouTube channel, www.youtube.com/ducksbaseball.

Duck Tales (Game One): Joash Brodin posted his fifth two-hit game in the Ducks’ last six contests. He now leads the team with 21 two-hit games and 26 multi-hit games this season…Despite the loss, Dontrelle Willis continued his dominance on the mound for Long Island. In his last four starts, the Major League veteran is 2-1 with a 1.33 ERA and has allowed just four runs on 17 hits while striking out 19 in 27 innings.

Duck Tales (Game Two): Brodin’s solo homer in the first gave him his sixth home run of the season. It was also the third time this season the Ducks have hit a leadoff homer. Danny Perales did it the previous two times on May 7 at Lancaster and May 20 at Camden. Long Island has now gone deep in nine of the last 10 games and has totaled 62 homers on the season, the most among Liberty Division teams…Brodin also collected his sixth three-hit game of the season, which puts him one in front of Ben Broussard for the team lead. The switch hitter now has multi-hit games in six of his last seven games and a team-high 27 on the season. With two RBIs, the second-year Duck earned his sixth two-RBI game and seventh multi-RBI contest.
