10TH INNING OUTBURST LIFTS DUCKS OVER BARNSTORMERS

Long Island bats around and plates five runs to earn win

(Lancaster, Pa., Sept. 13, 2017) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 9-4 in 10 innings on Wednesday night in the middle game of a three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

GAME VIDEO: Highlights from the extra inning victory

Lew Ford put the Ducks ahead with a first inning solo home run to left field off Barnstormers starter Scott Sebald. An RBI infield single by Elmer Reyes in the third doubled the lead to two.

Lancaster closed to within one in the third on an RBI double to right-center by Sean Halton off Ducks starter Matt Larkins. Long Island got the run back in the sixth on a two-out solo homer to left by Ruben Gotay to take a 3-1 advantage. However, Caleb Gindl lined a two-out, two-run homer to right in the bottom of the inning to tie the game up at three.

The Ducks grabbed the lead back in the eighth when Giovanny Alfonzo doubled and scored from second when the Barnstormers made two errors on Reyes’ grounder. Gindl then tied the game at four in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI single to left.

It stayed 4-4 until the 10th inning when Long Island batted around and scored five runs to take a 9-4 lead. Alfonzo doubled and scored one batter later on a throwing error, Reyes scored on a fielding error off Gotay’s bat and Angelo Songco lined a three-run double to left-center. Amalio Diaz then sealed the win by striking out the side in the bottom of the 10th.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Larkins threw seven innings of three-run ball, allowing seven hits and a walk while striking out eight. Sebald pitched six innings, giving up three runs on six hits with five strikeouts. Rob Rogers (6-1) picked up the win after pitching a scoreless ninth inning, working around a one-out single. Kaohi Downing (2-1) suffered the loss, surrendering three unearned runs on one hit and one walk in one and one-third innings.

Alfonzo led the Flock offensively with four hits and two runs scored.
