DUCKS WADDLE OFF PAST PATRIOTS IN EXTRAS

Long Island rallies back after Somerset ties game in ninth

Somerset took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Kyle Roller’s two-out, two-run single off Ducks starter Nick Struck. Long Island answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on Delta Cleary Jr.’s RBI single up the middle off Patriots starter Shaun Garceau.

Brian Van Kirk got the run back immediately in the second with a leadoff solo home run to left-center field, putting the Patriots ahead 3-1. It remained that way until the sixth when the Ducks struck for three runs to jump in front 4-3. Another RBI single by Cleary Jr., who later scored on Dan Lyons’ single, and a sacrifice fly to left by Ruben Gotay highlighted the inning. An RBI single by Gotay in the eighth extended the advantage to two.

The Patriots rallied to tie the score in the ninth on an RBI single by Roller and a run-scoring fielder’s choice off the bat of Carlos Guzman. It stayed that way until the 12th inning. After Chris McCoy worked out of a first-and-third, no-out jam, Fehlandt Lentini delivered an RBI single to center which scored Mike Blanke with the winning run.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Struck pitched five innings, yielding three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four. Garceau lasted six innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts. McCoy (1-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings of relief, giving up three hits while striking out two. Mickey Storey (1-7) suffered the loss, surrendering the winning run on two hits in one and one-third innings.

Lentini and Cleary Jr. each had three hits and two runs scored to lead Flock.

The Ducks and Patriots continue their four-game set on Wednesday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m. with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for full season ticket holders).
