JANNIS OUTDUELS MORGADO FOR SERIES OPENING WIN

Knuckleballer’s longest outing of year gives Ducks 1-0 win

(Central Islip, N.Y., June 29, 2015) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers 1-0 on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series at Bethpage Ballpark.

The only run of the game scored in the bottom of the first inning against Barnstormers starter Bryan Morgado. Lew Ford grounded out to third base, and upon the throw, Delta Cleary, Jr. raced home and beat the tag from Keith Castillo to put Long Island ahead.

Ducks starter Mickey Jannis (6-2) was sensational to earn the win. He tossed eight and one-third innings, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out 11 batters. Morgado (0-3) suffered the hard luck loss, yielding just one unearned run on two hits with six strikeouts in five innings. Ryan Kussmaul collected his 19th save of the season by retiring the final two batters of the game and stranding two runners in scoring position.

Cleary, Jr. led the Flock offensively with two hits.

The Ducks and Barnstormers continue their four-game set on Tuesday night. Game time is slated for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35 (5:20 for season ticket holders). Duck Tales: Long Island tied a franchise record by winning their 22nd game during the month of June. They had previously won 22 games in a single month twice, doing so in August of 2000 and July of 2003. In addition, the Ducks earned their franchise record 14th consecutive win at Bethpage Ballpark. The Ducks have a 23-6 record at home this season, which is the best in the Atlantic League (.793)…Mickey Jannis pitched his longest outing of the season by going eight and one-third innings. In addition, he struck out a season-high 11 batters, which is just one shy of the most by a Duck in a single game this year. John Brownell was the only Duck to strikeout more, setting down 12 Camden Riversharks batters on strikes on May 22. In his last 13 games (eight starts), Jannis has allowed one earned run or less and has given up just six earned runs total over 67 and one-third innings of work (0.80 ERA). In that span, he has given up 39 hits and 20 walks while striking out 58…Lew Ford extended his on-base streak to 22 consecutive games with two walks. During the streak, the outfielder/bench coach is batting .412 (35-for-85) with eight doubles, one homer, 14 RBI and 17 runs. With his RBI in the first inning, he became the first Atlantic Leaguer this season to reach 50 runs batted in…Delta Cleary, Jr. collected his third multi-hit game in his last four contests with two hits. In those four games, he is batting .600 (9-for-15) with two doubles, one triple, three RBI and two runs scored. The outfielder now has a total of five two-hit games and 12 multi-hit contests this season.
