Patriots bang out 17 hits to earn victory

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 28, 2010) – The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 10-5 on Wednesday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,157 at Suffolk County Sports Park.

The Patriots got off to a fast start in the top of the first frame off Ducks’ starter Kip Wells, scoring three runs on four hits. RBI singles by Joe Burke, Jeff Nettles and Josh Pressley gave the Pats a 3-0 advantage.

Long Island fought back in the home second with two runs, highlighted by RBI doubles from Matt Esquivel and Brendan Monaghan, to cut the deficit to one.

Somerset quickly regained their three-run lead with a two-spot in the top of the third. RBI singles by Pressley and Pete LaForest pushed the score to 5-2.

Esquivel struck again in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run blast over the left field wall, as the Ducks knotted the contest at five.

The lead didn’t last long as pinch-hitter Elliott Ayala took Wells deep for a two-run homer in the top of the sixth, and Somerset reclaimed the lead.

Two more runs in the seventh off Ducks’ reliever Julio Guerrero sealed the game as Iggy Suarez’ RBI double and Wayne Lydon’s RBI single extended the lead to four. LaForest’s RBI single in the eighth gave the Pats a 10-5 lead, their biggest of the night.

Casey Cahill (3-4) earned the win, tossing three and one-third scoreless innings of relief, and Wells (1-2) absorbed the loss, surrendering seven runs in his six innings of work.

Esquivel led the charge with two hits and four RBI, while Mohr added three hits and two runs scored.

The Ducks and Patriots wrap up their four-game series on Thursday night. Game time is set for 7:05 PM, with the Suffolk County Sports Park gates opening at 6:05. Duck Tales: With a second inning double, Matt Esquivel added to his team-leading total with 19. Esquivel already has equaled his total from last season, when he had 19 with the York Revolution. Esquivel also smashed his 10^th homer of the season, tying Ray Navarrete for the club lead. It was Esquivel's first dinger against a southpaw and ninth at the Duck Pond in 2010...Dustan Mohr’s three hits matched his season-high. The former big leaguer last belted three hits on July 1^st against the Newark Bears, in a 6-4 loss at Suffolk County Sports Park. Mohr also extended his home on-base streak to 25 games, which is the longest active streak in the Atlantic League. Mohr holds the longest season on-base streak for the Flock this season as well at 26.

Johnny Hernandez and Matt Padgett spark Ducks to third consecutive win

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 27, 2010) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 6-3 on Tuesday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,066 at Suffolk County Sports Park.

GAME AUDIO: Padgett's two-run single.

Two runs in the home first inning off Pats’ starter Jonathon Ellis gave the Ducks an early advantage. Javier Colina’s RBI groundout and Matt Padgett’s two-out RBI single to right field did the damage.

In the top of the fourth, back-to-back homers by Noah Hall and Pete LaForest off Ducks’ starter Kyle Jackson evened the score at two.

Both teams traded runs in the sixth as Michael Hernandez’ solo homer gave the Pats a slim 3-2 lead in the top half, while Brendan Monaghan’s RBI single tied the game at three.

Long Island put the game away with a three-spot in the seventh off former-Duck Ben Grezlovski. A John Rodriguez RBI single and a two-run base hit by Padgett pushed the Ducks’ lead to 6-3.

Chris McCoy (1-0) picked up the victory, firing three scoreless innings of relief, and Grezlovski (5-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs in his inning of work.

Rodriguez, Padgett and Monaghan each chipped in with two hits, while Johnny Hernandez added a single, two runs scored, and three walks.

The Ducks and Patriots continue their four-game series on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 7:05 PM, with the Suffolk County Sports Park gates opening at 6:05. Duck Tales: Infielder Matt Padgett was activated prior to the game after missing almost two months with a broken foot and picked up where he left off. Padgett reached base three times and drove in two runs as well…Winning pitcher Chris McCoy picked up his first win in the Atlantic League since September 7, 2001, when he pitched eight and two-thirds innings as a starter in a victory over the Lehigh Valley Black Diamonds. McCoy went 6-8 in 33 apperances for the Ducks in 2001…John Rodriguez’ two hits in the contest added to his hot play at the Duck Pond. Rodriguez is now hitting .303 with 19 RBI at Suffolk County Sports Park this season.

Ray Navarrete's go-ahead homer leads Ducks to series-opening win

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 26, 2010) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-2 on Monday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,015 at Suffolk County Sports Park.

The Ducks tacked on the game's first run in the second inning against Patriots’ starter Jason Monti. Matt Cavagnaro’s RBI single drove home Robinson Cancel to put the hosts ahead 1-0. Somerset tied the game in the fourth on Josh Pressley’s RBI single to center off Ducks’ starter Randy Leek.

John Rodriguez put Long Island back in front in the sixth with a solo home run over the right field wall, giving the Ducks a 2-1 advantage. The Pats quickly tied the score in the bottom of the frame courtesy of Pete LaForest's RBI single to right.

The Flock flexed their muscles again in the eighth when they took the lead for good against Patriots’ reliever Carlos Hines. Ray Navarrete’s opposite field solo homer and Javier Colina’s two-run dinger to left pushed the Ducks ahead 5-2.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Leek went seven innings, allowing just five hits and two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts. Monti worked five innings, surrendering five hits and one run while striking out four.

Bill Simas (1-0) picked up the victory, tossing a perfect eighth inning. Hines (2-1) was saddled with the loss, yielding three runs on two hits in his two-thirds of an inning of relief. Ricardo Gomez threw a scoreless ninth for his fourth save of the season.

Navarrete, Cancel, and Cavagnaro led the Ducks at the plate with two hits each.

Duck Tales: John Rodriguez’ solo homer in the sixth inning was his seventh longball of the season. Rodriguez has now clubbed three homers in his last six games…Ray Navarrete’s home run in the eighth gave him his 10th homer this season. He is the first Duck to hit 10 home runs in 2010, after leading the team with 25 dingers a year ago…Javier Colina’s two-run homer in the eighth was his fifth of the season. All five of his homers have come at Suffolk County Sports Park. Colina is now hitting .381 at the Duck Pond in 2010.

Long Island pounds out eight runs and 12 hits in series finale

(Waldorf, MD, July 25, 2010) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 8-6 on Sunday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Long Island jumped on the scoreboard first with a four-spot in the third inning off Blue Crabs’ starter Craig Anderson. Ray Navarrete’s two-run single, Javier Colina’s RBI double, and Dustan Mohr’s RBI single did the damage as the Ducks took a 4-0 lead.

Southern Maryland got a run back in the bottom of the third against Ducks’ starter Daryl Harang. Casey Benjamin’s sacrifice fly scored Richard Giannotti and closed the gap to 4-1.

The Ducks extended their lead in the sixth, as Bridger Hunt’s two-run single to center plated Mohr and Matt Esquivel, increasing the lead to 6-1. Southern Maryland cut the deficit to four in their half of the sixth on a RBI double to right by Matt Craig.

Long Island’s offensive onslaught continued in the seventh when they put up another two-spot. Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch and Esquivel knocked a RBI double to left, pushing the lead to 8-2.

The Blue Crabs would not go quietly however, scoring three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth. Benjamin’s RBI single and Eric Crozier’s two-run single in the seventh, along with a sacrifice fly from Giannotti in the eighth closed the gap to 8-6.

Harang (2-0) earned the victory, tossing five and one-third scoreless innings, allowing just two runs and four hits with three strikeouts. Anderson (6-2) suffered the loss, yielding six runs (three earned) on nine hits while striking out seven in six innings. Ricardo Gomez picked up his third save with one and one-third scoreless innings.

John Rodriguez' sixth homer of the season wasn't enough

(Waldorf, MD, July 23, 2010) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Long Island Ducks 5-1 on Friday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Southern Maryland cracked the scoreboard in the second inning off Ducks’ starter Kip Wells. Following back-to-back walks, Christian Lopez hit a ground-rule double to left field, scoring Shaun Cumberland. The Blue Crabs stretched their lead to 2-0 in the third when Casey Benjamin scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Eric Crozier.

The Ducks plated their lone run of the game in the fourth when John Rodriguez launched a solo home run to center off Blue Crabs’ starter Kenny Rayborn, trimming the deficit to 2-1.

Lopez and Crozier used the longball to extend Southern Maryland's advantage, as Lopez’ solo homer off Wells in the sixth and Crozier’s two-run shot in the seventh off Ducks’ reliever Benny Cepeda made the score 5-1.

Rayborn (8-4) earned the victory, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four in his six and one-third innings of work. Wells (1-1) absorbed the loss, yielding three runs (two earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts in six innings.

Rodriguez’ two hits led the Ducks at the plate.

Jake Dittler pitched six solid innings for Long Island

(Waldorf, MD, July 24, 2010) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Long Island Ducks 6-4 on Saturday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.

Shaun Cumberland put the Blue Crabs on the scoreboard first against Ducks’ starter Jake Dittler, as his fourth inning three-run home run over the left field wall gave the hosts a 3-0 lead. Southern Maryland extended their advantage to 5-0 in the seventh, as Travis Garcia laced a two-run double to center, scoring Eric Crozier and Jamar Hill.

Long Island scored their first run in the eighth against Crabs’ reliever Ryan Speier, as Javier Colina doubled and scored on Dustan Mohr’s RBI single to center. Christian Lopez responded in the eighth with a leadoff solo homer that extended the lead to 6-1.

In the ninth, the Flock put together a rally off Blue Crabs’ closer Jim Ed Warden. Following singles by Matt Esquivel and Todd Jennings, Ray Navarrete smashed a RBI double to right and Erick Monzon roped a two-run single to center, closing the gap to 6-4, though the rally would end there.

Joe Newby (3-2) picked up the win for the Blue Crabs, tossing three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts. Dittler (8-7) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out seven in his six innings of work.

Esquivel and Jennings paced the Ducks on offense with three hits apiece.

Flock falls in series opener

(Waldorf, MD, July 22, 2010) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs defeated the Long Island Ducks 13-3 on Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium.

The Blue Crabs struck first with four runs in the opening frame against Ducks’ starter Kyle Jackson. A RBI single by Travis Garcia and a three-run home run to left field by Shaun Cumberland did the damage and gave the hosts a 4-0 lead.

Long Island responded with a run in the top of the second against Southern Maryland starter Dan Reichert, as Johnny Hernandez’ RBI double scored Javier Colina, who also doubled. The Crabs got the run back in their half of the second on Patrick Osborn’s RBI groundout, making the score 5-1.

Southern Maryland opened up the game with three runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. Casey Benjamin hit a three-run homer to left and Jamar Hill scored on an error as the lead was stretched to 9-1. Two more runs off Ducks’ reliever Julio Guerrero in the sixth increased the advantage to ten.

The Ducks added a run in the eighth on John Rodriguez’ RBI single before Cumberland’s second homer of the night put Southern Maryland up 13-2. A Billy Kovatch RBI single in the ninth rounded out the scoring.

Reichert (10-6) picked up the win, tossing seven innings, allowing four hits and one run with five strikeouts. Jackson (2-8) suffered the loss, allowing 10 hits and nine runs (eight earned) in five innings of work.

Billy Kovatch paced the Ducks offensively with two hits in the contest.

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 20, 2010) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Newark Bears 5-4 in walk-off fashion on Tuesday night at Suffolk County Sports Park.

In the visitor’s third, the Bears cracked the scoreboard as Elijah Dukes belted a three-run homer over the left field wall off Ducks’ starter Daryl Harang and gave Newark a 3-0 advantage.

Long Island cut the lead to two in the subsequent inning when John Rodriguez blasted a solo shot over the right field fence off Bears’ starter Mike Loree.

The Bears got the run back in the top of the seventh on a Manny Mejia solo homer to push the lead to 4-1.

Newark's advantage didn’t last long as the Flock fought back with three runs in the home half of the seventh inning to tie the contest at four. Javier Colina’s solo homer over the left field wall cut the deficit to two and Matt Esquivel’s two-run blast over the right-center field wall knotted the game.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the ninth inning when Esquivel blasted his second homer of the game to send the Ducks home with their third consecutive victory and their fourth straight over the Bears.

Ricardo Gomez (2-0) picked up the win with a scoreless ninth inning and Greg Reinhard (2-3) was saddled with the loss, allowing four runs in his two and one-third innings pitched.

Ray Navarrete, Rodriguez and Esquivel each had two hits for the Ducks, who tied a season-high with four homers in the game.

The Ducks wrap up their series against the Bears on Wednesday night. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m., with the Suffolk County Sports Park gates opening at 6:05. The Bay Shore native is now hitting .394 (13-for-33) over his last ten games…With two more hits in the Tuesday’s contest, Javier Colina now has 15 hits through the homestand’s first eight games. Colina’s seventh inning homer also gave him his 4th longball and 11th RBI of the homestand.…The four homers in the game tied a season-high, which was set on June 15^th at the Somerset Patriots. Long Island completes homestand with five wins

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 21, 2010) – The Newark Bears defeated the Long Island Ducks 12-5 on Wednesday night in front of a past-capacity crowd of 6,039 at Suffolk County Sports Park.

Newark claimed the first run in the visitor’s first on an Elijah Dukes solo shot over the center field wall. The Ducks quickly answered with a three-spot in the next half an inning. Robinson Cancel’s RBI single, Javier Colina’s RBI sacrifice fly and a throwing error by catcher Isaiah Kaaihue gave the Ducks a 3-1 advantage.

The Bears got the runs right back against Ducks’ starter Randy Leek in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Manny Mejia’s RBI single, Randy Gress’ RBI double and Kennard Jones’ RBI groundout gave Newark their second lead of the contest.

In the home fourth, the Ducks jumped back out in front on a Cancel two-strike, two-out, two-run single through the middle, and the Flock had a 5-4 lead.

Continuing the back-and-forth game, the Bears took a two-run advantage in the top of fifth courtesy of a RBI groundout by Carl Everett and RBI singles by Brian Barton and Kaaihue.

Newark put the game away with four runs in the ninth, highlighted by an Edgardo Alfonzo RBI double and Gress RBI triple.

Newark starter Matt Smith (6-8) picked up the win, tossing five innings, yielding eight hits and five runs, with three strikeouts. Leek (9-5) took the loss, surrendering seven runs and 11 hits in six innings of work.

(Central Islip, N.Y., July 18, 2010) – The Long Island Ducks defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish 10-3 on Sunday night in front of a past-capacity crowd of 6,242 at Suffolk County Sports Park.

Long Island cracked the scoreboard with two runs in the first inning off Bridgeport starter Kevin Mannix. Javier Colina’s two-run blast over the left field wall gave the Ducks the early advantage.

In the fourth, the Ducks extended their lead to three when Erick Monzon ripped a RBI single into center field to plate Robinson Cancel, who led off the frame with a walk.

In the subsequent inning, Bridgeport claimed their first run as Wily Mo Pena took Ducks’ starter Kip Wells over the left-center field wall to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Long Island came right back with four runs in the home half of the fifth to put the hammer down against Mannix. A bases-loaded walk to Johnny Hernandez, Matt Esquivel's RBI sacrifice fly, and Brendan Monaghan's RBI double highlighted the fateful inning.

A solo homer from Hernandez and a RBI single by Monzon in the home seventh helped open up a seven-run advantage.
