Long Island rallies in opener; Blue Crabs take game two

(Central Islip, N.Y., May 26, 2013) – The Long Island Ducks split a day/night doubleheader with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Sunday, winning game one 3-2 before dropping game two 9-2 at Bethpage Ballpark.

Long Island lit the scoreboard in the third inning of game one on Ray Navarrete’s two-run double to left field off Blue Crabs starter Wade Korpi. Southern Maryland battled back to tie the score in the fifth against Ducks starter John Brownell on a solo homer by Cyle Hankerd and a run-scoring error.

It stayed that way until the sixth when the Ducks re-took the lead for good. Adam Bailey doubled to right-center and came home on a sacrifice fly two batters later by Murray Watts.

Brownell (3-3) earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out six. Logan Williamson (1-1) suffered the loss after allowing a run on three hits in two and one-third innings of relief. Korpi lasted just three innings, allowing two runs on four hits. Jared Lansford earned his first save, striking out the side in a perfect ninth.

In game two, the Blue Crabs struck first with two runs in the second inning, scoring on a RBI groundout and a sacrifice fly. They added three more in the fifth inning, with two scoring on an error and the other on a RBI single by Ryan Mulhern.

Joash Brodin hit a solo home run to right field in the sixth inning to put the Ducks on the board, but Southern Maryland scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings and two more in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach.

Blue Crabs starter Daryl Thompson (3-3) earned the win, giving up one run on four hits in seven innings of work. Long Island starter Matt Way (2-3) took the loss, surrendering six runs (two earned) on six hits with six strikeouts in seven innings.

The Ducks return to action on Wednesday when they open up a two-game set against the Camden Riversharks. Game time is set for 6:35 p.m., with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 5:35. The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive 5 Millionth Fan Pins as part six of seven in the 2013 Collector’s Series. Southpaw Bill Murphy takes the mound for the Ducks against Riversharks righty Jeff Farnsworth.
