Third grade student recognized for essay about police officers

(Syosset, N.Y., Jan. 6, 2017) – On Thursday, January 5, the Long Island Ducks kicked off their annual TD Bank “Take a Duck to Class” essay contest visits at A.P. Willits Elementary School. Sophie Jaeyoon Kil, a third grade student at the school, was honored for submitting a winning essay regarding why she believes police officers are heroes in her community.

During the morning, an assembly was hosted for all of the school’s students. Following opening remarks from Principal James Connolly, members of the Ducks Street Team congratulated Sophie on her wonderful work, which she then read aloud to the entire school. After a thunderous ovation, Sophie was then presented with a $50 Visa gift card by Eric Fishon, TD Bank Vice President of U.S. Field Marketing Strategy, and Olivia Soltan, TD Bank Syosset Store Manager.

Next, Nassau County Police Officer Matthew McCartin showed his appreciation for Sophie choosing police officers as heroes in her community and thanked the students for their support, as they each wore blue clothing that day. Long Island’s favorite mascot, QuackerJack, was then welcomed by the students, many of whom gave him high fives as he entered the gym. Finally, Sophie and her third grade class enjoyed a special autograph and photo session with QuackerJack in their classroom. Everyone received a signature from QJ, was able to meet Officer Matthew and took home a gift bag full of goodies, courtesy of TD Bank.
