(Central Islip, N.Y., June 12, 2010) – The Long Island Ducks swept a day/night doubleheader against the Lancaster Barnstormers on Saturday at Suffolk County Sports Park, winning by scores of 10-9 and 1-0.
GAME AUDIO: Dustan's Mohr's game-winning, two-run homer.
GAME AUDIO: Esposito saves it for Long Island.
In game one, Lancaster jumped on the board first in the second inning when Ryan Mulhern doubled home Aaron Herr, who also reached on a double. The Barnstormers extended the lead with a five-spot in the third off Ducks’ starter Randy Leek. Jason Perry’s three-run home run and Bryant Nelson’s two-run homer did the damage and gave the visitors a 6-0 lead.
The Ducks began their fight back with two runs in the third off Barnstormers’ starter Nick Maness. Brendan Monaghan’s two-run double scored John Rodriguez and Dustan Mohr, who both walked, to cut the lead to 6-2. Long Island tied the game at six with a four-run fourth. Matt Cavagnaro scored on a balk, and three batters later, Dustan Mohr launched a three-run blast over the left field wall to even the score.
In the fifth, Lancaster took the lead back as a RBI single by Nelson and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mulhern gave the ‘Stormers an 8-6 lead. They picked up another run in the following inning on a home run by Lloyd Turner.
The Ducks rallied once again as they pulled within a run in the bottom of the sixth. Juan Francia’s RBI singles from Juan Francia and Johnny Hernandez trimmed the lead to 9-8. Long Island would take the lead for good in the eighth as Dustan Mohr uncorked his second long ball of the game, this one a two-run homer, to give the Ducks a 10-9 advantage.
Chris Spurling (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief while Jason Simontacchi (1-4) suffered the loss, yielding two runs in his one and two-thirds innings of relief work. Joe Esposito nailed down his third save with a perfect ninth.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Leek went three innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs while striking out three for Long Island. Maness yielded three hits, three earned runs, and six walks in his three and two-thirds innings of work.
Mohr, Hernandez, and Bridger Hunt all picked up three hits while Mohr’s five RBI led the way for the Flock.
In the nightcap, the Ducks cracked the scoreboard in the fourth as Mohr hit a one-out double and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Erick Monzon.
GAME AUDIO: Sidney Ponson sends Ducks to sweep.
GAME AUDIO: Sidney Ponson sends Ducks to sweep.
That was all Ducks’ starter Sidney Ponson (4-5) would need, as he threw a complete game shutout, allowing just seven hits and two walks while striking out four. Barnstormers’ starter Ben Fritz (0-4) took the loss, allowing only the one run and four hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Mohr and Monzon both picked up a double and a walk to help pace the Ducks’ offense.
