Ponson powers Ducks to second straight win
(Central Islip, N.Y., April 28, 2010) –The Long Island Ducks defeated the Somerset Patriots 10-1 on Wednesday night at Suffolk County Sports Park.
Long Island cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third frame when catcher Tom Pennino doubled home Johnny Hernandez for the game’s first run. In the fourth, back-to-back doubles by Adam Pavkovich and Dustan Mohr and a RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Matt Esquivel helped the Flock push their lead to three.
The Ducks tacked on two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings off Somerset starter Josh Miller. In the fifth, Billy Kovatch’s RBI double down the right field line and Pavkovich’s RBI single into center field did the damage, while RBI singles by Matt Cavagnaro and Kovatch moved the Ducks’ advantage to six.
In the seventh, the Flock put the hammer down with a three-spot against Pats' reliever Michael Gardner. Four hits, including Esquivel’s two-run double into the right-center field gap highlighted the frame.
Sidney Ponson (2-0) earned the win, firing six and two-thirds innings, yielding three hits and one run. Miller (1-1) took the loss, allowing 11 hits and seven runs in his six innings of work.
The Ducks racked up a season-high 15 hits, led by Dustan Mohr, who went 3-for-4. Kovatch, Pavkovich, Esquivel and Cavagnaro all chipped in with two hits apiece.
