DUCKS BLAST BEARS
Long Island collects 15 runs and 14 hits in series finale
(Newark, N.J., July 11, 2010) - The Long Island Ducks defeated the Newark Bears 15-1 on Sunday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
The Ducks went to work immediately as they put up a five-spot in the first inning against Bears’ starter Matt Smith. Dustan Mohr’s bases loaded walk, Matt Esquivel’s three-run double to center field, and Juan Francia’s RBI single to left did the damage as Long Island took a 5-0 lead.
The Flock went back to work at the plate with two more runs in the second as Mohr ripped a RBI double and Esquivel connected on a sacrifice fly to extend the Ducks’ lead to 7-1. The Ducks added another five-spot in the fourth against Bears’ reliever Willie Banks when Johnny Hernandez knocked a RBI single to center and Ray Navarrete launched a grand slam over the left field wall, upping the score to 12-1. Hernandez’ sacrifice fly to left in the fifth stretched the lead to 12.
The offensive fireworks continued in the eighth as Francia ripped a triple to right and came around to score on Matt Cavagnaro’s two-run homer to right, rounding out the scoring at 15-1.
That was more than enough for Esposito (3-4), who earned the win, tossing eight innings, allowing just one run on six hits, while striking out seven. Smith (4-8) absorbed the loss, yielding seven runs (five earned) on five hits and four walks in two innings of work.
