EMPIRE ANGEL JAMES FUNARO
6 year-old presented with second “Empire Angel” award of 2011
(Central Islip, N.Y., July 17, 2011) – At Sunday’s game between the Long Island Ducks and the Road Warriors, James Funaro was recognized as the second “Empire Angel” of the 2011 season. Funaro received a plaque to recognize his contributions, as well as a t-shirt and hat before the game.
For some, wearing a tie everyday is a requirement for work. For 6-year-old James Funaro, it's a way to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County. James started out trying to set a record for the most consecutive days an individual has worn a tie. The Guinness Book of World Records suggests coupling a fundraising endeavor with the record-breaking feat, and James chose the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Suffolk County. James abandoned his quest for a world record, but decided to continue raising money for charity anyway. The ambitious first-grader set an original goal to raise $1,000 for Make-A-Wish and has now raised a total of over $6,000.
The Long Island Ducks have teamed up with Empire BlueCross BlueShield to present the "Empire Angels" program. This program has been designed to recognize those who give back to their community and are selfless in helping others. Those selected as the "Empire Angel" will receive four tickets to the game, be recognized during a pre-game on-field ceremony, and throw out the ceremonial first pitch. Empire BlueCross BlueShield and the Ducks will honor their next “Empire Angel” at the Ducks’ home game against the Road Warriors on Friday, June 17.
The Long Island Ducks play their home games at Bethpage Ballpark and are in their 12th season of play. Individual game tickets for the 2011 season are on sale now.
